4-13-10 Clay County Fair Tourney
On Saturday, April 10, thirty-three scholastic chess enthusiasts gathered under the big, white tent on the Clay County Fairgrounds to battle it out for trophies in the first local chess tournament of the Spring. Such a beautiful day was meant for playing chess outdoors and the occasional breeze cooled both contestants and spectators, reminding us all that our wonderful game of chess is first and foremost a fun and enjoyable activity.
During the tournament, students shook hands before and after games, officials strolled through the aisles to verify ‘checkmate’, record outcomes, and transfer results for tabulation in the computer. Students from 2nd grade through high school, representing 15 mostly area schools, participated in separate divisions for a chance to win trophies.
When all was said and done, a couple of competitors had lost all their games, two were victorious in all 4 games, and in between were the usual range of mixed results common to a “Swiss System” chess tourney. Each contestant received a medal for participation and the following students/teams scored well enough to earn their special prize for stellar performance:
